My name is Don Place. I served in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne Division; I served in combat, with a combat battalion. I was a teenager at the time, and this is about a group of incidents that happened in 1967 and 1968. The title “Days” comes from the number of days left in country, which we all kept track of and knew like our names.

I was in high school thoughout the Vietnam conflict.I, like many of my classmates, did not comprehend the magnitude of the war.
I have read and reread this book three times. It's written in a manner that makes the reader feel that they are experiencing the same events as the author. It allows the reader to better understand what very young men endured during that era.
It made me feel guilty for not reading and listening to the nightly news and learning about the horror in Southeast Asia.
It made me respect all those who participated.

Gripping can't put down book.
Great book. Heard his story in person and he is a great public speaker
Amazing war stories that have no spin told straight from the perspective of a soldier. I can't believe the tragedies in this book.
This was a easy read. I found the time lines confusing. It would be a good book for a Vietnam veteran to read.
Good book. It was reflective of many years and (days) past. Vietnam was a place of magic and mystery, beauty and turmoil. Loving and losing. Walking dead, on mission after mission through a hellish jungle of pestilence and decaying flesh. Somehow, surviving the carnage all around. Coming home wasn't a homecoming and home would never be the same.
An excellent read. Not sure if Don is the luckiest guy on earth or the un-luckiest. The stories are incredible, raw, and insightful.
This is an amazing, vivid account of jungle war from the eye of a soldier from Iowa trying to do the right thing .... and stay alive. Friendship, bravery, poetry and empathy mark this voice that brings the self-deprecating humor of Tolstoy into the 1960s. In unforgettable scene after scene, Place loses friends, improvises and fights as best he can, and even ends up behind enemy lines, hitching a ride with two Viet Cong to get himself home. The Vietnam War as you've never seen it before. A must-read for scholars, historians and fans of books like Black Hawk Down.
