Grieving after the death of his younger brother, Hugh Castle, the Earl of Monnow, finds evidence to suggest it was not an accident, but a failed attempt to kill him. He vows revenge, planning to take advantage of the rumor that he is also dead to uncover the murderer.

But Hugh doesn't count on meeting another desperate adventurer, Helen Archer. She has lost the fabled Peckham Necklace at Hugh's home, Ormsby, and risks censure if she doesn't find it. So together, Helen and Hugh hatch the perfect plan. They will masquerade as servants to gain access to Hugh's grand house and accomplish their missions in secret.

Unfortunately, it is more limiting to work as servants than they thought, and their plans soon go awry. Increasingly attracted to Helen, Hugh finds it difficult to protect her from the unknown danger stalking the grand halls of Ormsby, and ultimately, he must decide if his heart's desire is truly revenge, or love.

This was another light, likable and entertaining book from Amy Corwin. I read a ridiculous number of both romances and mysteries, so it's always a treat (and sadly rare!) to find a book that combines the two with some success. The mystery isn't especially clever or intricately plotted, but it works as a fun diversion. The characters are likable and root-worthy (certainly not a given in this genre!), albeit not especially layered or compelling. And while I read romances that range from steamy to G-rated, it's an awfully refreshing change these days to come across one that doesn't include painfully explicit, graphic, can't-tell-one-from-the-other sex scenes. The H and h in Escaping Notice are focused on things other than sex, and that suited this reader just fine.

I didn't like this one quite as much as The Vital Principle, which was one of the more supremely enjoyable low-cost books that my Kindle and I devoured that year. I did, however, like this a lot more than A Rose Before Dying, which just didn't come together for me. For me, there's a certain depth, substance and undefinable magic missing from Amy Corwin's books that keeps them from being true favorites or even especially memorable, but that's more of a subjective feeling than an objective criticism. They're certainly entertaining, enjoyable and refreshingly angst-free reads that are worth the reasonable price!

The Earl Masquerade (Audible Audio Edition) Amy Corwin Ruth Urquhart Audible Studios Books Reviews

I really enjoyed the characters and the plot was excellent. The resolution of the mystery was not totally unexpected; however, it was interesting to see it so intertwined with the character development of the hero.

What kept this book from getting 5 stars were two things. I prefer a little more romance along the way and also a less abrupt ending or an epilogue would have been nice. Normally, I would only give a 3-star rating for the lack of those two things. I so thoroughly enjoyed the characters, the plot and writing style that 3 stars wouldn't have done this book justice.

If you are looking for a well-written, excellent story with delightful characters, I highly recommend this book.
One has to suspend belief with this story. Hugh Castle, the Earl of Monnow, survives a ship wreck which he finds to be the result of sabotage. He decides to return to his home disguised as a servant to investigate in secret. I find it hard to believe that neither his aunt nor any of the long time servants will recognize Hugh Castle, the Earl of Monnow, simply because he has grown a beard.

Helen Archer had lost the famous Peckham necklace at a ball at the Monnow estate. Rather than simply ask if it has been found she too returns disguised as a servant to see if she can find it herself. I suppose she doesn't realize that servants would have cleaned up and put things away after the ball and if the necklace were there someone would already have found it.

Aside from that, it is a light-hearted read with interesting looks into the different aspects of Regency life. One can have empathy for the protagonists and also Ned, the earl's nephew who has fled the home of his harsh aunts to run away to sea and also ends up as a servant in the earl's home. Aside from the mystery of who sabotaged the earl's boat, one is also wondering about how the protagonists are going to explain their actions when they reveal themselves as to who they really are. It can be a fun read with good dialogue and descriptions if one brushes aside the unrealistic plot contrivances.
I have read several books by Amy Corwin and liked them all, but this is definitely my favorite. The hero, Hugh, Earl of Munnow, survives a shipwreck of his yacht which takes the life of his brother. He knows sabotage was involved and is determined to find the culprit. With the aid of his lawyer and Second Sons Inquiries he poses as the new Steward at his estate after growing a beard and doing some other things to change his appearance. Helen, our heroine, is also "undercover" in an attempt to retrieve a priceless necklace she lost at the Earl's recent ball. And my favorite character, Edward or Ned, is the Earl's nephew and has run away from the spinster aunts who have done a ghastly job of raising him because of their threat to send him to his uncle, Earl Munnow, and encounters Helen at an inn common room. Now scene is set and you can read the book for the rest. My favorite thing about this book is the character development as the Earl discovers what people really thought about him, Helen learns to be independent and develops a serious fondness, no love, for young Ned, and although it is perhaps a bit predictable in it's outcomes there are surprises along the way and those outcomes are exactly what you want to see happen. It is well written and well edited like all Ms. Corwin's ebooks, and i finished it with that lovely warm and fuzzy feeling in my chest and a large smile on my face.
This book made my imagination soar! My interest was captured and kept through out the book. The story line is simple and sweet. The characters in this book are all trying to hide something from one another. Were events real enough to believe? Frankly, it doesn't matter. This book is not a "reality" book, but one that speaks to the romantic sensibilities. It's a book to be enjoyed; a book to stir the imagination; a book that take you to another time and place to escape "reality" and perhaps bring a smile or chuckle. I loved the characters and they were so well defined I could picture them in my mind. The Earl learned a lot about himself when he poses as the steward. He is forced to be somewhat objective about his life and his treatment of others. It sort of makes one wonder if he or she could assume a role, what would be revealed? I enjoyed reading this book and I would recommend it to anyone who needs a bit of escapism from time to time.
